Queen Elizabeth’s Favorite Pre-Lunch Cocktail Revealed by Tom Parker Bowles

Tom Parker Bowles, son of Queen Camilla, has unveiled a lesser-known cocktail once enjoyed by the late Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mother. Despite the Royal Family’s reputation, Tom emphasizes that they have never been heavy drinkers. However, both Queen Elizabeth and her mother famously liked to sip this refreshing cocktail before lunch.

In his recently published book, Cooking & The Crown, Tom explains, “Despite the vast and magnificently stocked cellars at Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace, the monarchs, from Queen Victoria to King Charles III, were not (and are not) great drinkers. The Queen Mother, known as a generous host, enjoyed the occasional tipple but never to excess.”

The drink, affectionately called ‘The Queen Mother’s Gin & Dubonnet,’ is a simple yet elegant blend of just four ingredients. The key component is Dubonnet, a sweet red-wine-based quinquina, combined with gin, a squeeze of lemon, and plenty of ice. Tom describes the flavor as sweet, herbal, and slightly bitter—an ideal way to brighten the day. “It certainly puts a spring in one’s step,” he adds.

Tom also addresses misconceptions about the Royal Family’s lifestyle, particularly rumors surrounding Queen Camilla. He strongly refutes claims that she indulges in heavy drinking or smoking, suggesting such notions may stem from the satirical TV series The Windsors. In a 2023 interview with The Times, he stated, “She’s never drunk a glass of gin in her life, doesn’t smoke, and I’ve never seen her even tipsy.” While Queen Camilla reportedly smoked in the past, sources now describe her as leading a notably healthy lifestyle.

King Charles and Queen Camilla favor wholesome meals prepared with fresh ingredients, often sourced from their own estates. Tom’s book offers a fascinating glimpse into over a century of Royal dining, featuring dishes that range from the extravagant Pommes Elizabeth to straightforward classics you can recreate at home.

In addition to the iconic cocktail, Tom shares recipes for other beloved Royal beverages including iced coffee and lemonade—highlighting the Royal Family’s preference for simple, personalized drinks.
