Jeremy Clarkson’s venture into providing outdoor shelter at his Cotswolds pub, The Farmer’s Dog, appears to be encountering some setbacks. Despite investing £40,000 in a high-end gazebo system designed to keep patrons dry and extend outdoor dining year-round, the costly addition has become a bit of a liability during heavy rain.
Clarkson, who initially questioned the necessity of expensive umbrellas for his pub’s outdoor area, was persuaded to install the gazebo after discussions with pub experts Sue and Rachel Hawkins, featured on his Amazon Prime series, Clarkson’s Farm. The star, aged 65, eventually agreed to the investment in hopes of enhancing the customer experience regardless of the weather.
However, visitors have witnessed staff wrestling with the aftermath of rain, as large pools of water collect on the gazebo’s canopy material. On June 12, pub guest Wez Marlow, celebrating his birthday, captured video footage showing staff struggling to drain the accumulated water.

Marlow commented, “Once the channels between them are sorted, then yes they will be worth the investment.” He highlighted the benefit of making the decking area usable throughout the year, allowing more customers to enjoy food and drinks outside even when the weather turns sour.
Despite the drainage issues, Marlow praised the pub experience, saying, “Fortunately, it didn’t ruin our experience there; we found the food was really good.”
Nonetheless, public reaction has been mixed, with some mocking the expensive setup. Comments ranged from sarcastic remarks like “£40,000 well spent” to critiques calling it a “rain collecting rain protection system.” Some suggested that Clarkson should consider replacing the gazebo with a more durable solid roof to better withstand the elements.
The Farmer’s Dog pub has been approached for comment regarding the situation.
