Psychologist Emphasizes the Benefits of Summer Boredom for Children

Summer boredom among children isn’t something to fear, but rather to embrace, according to child development expert and psychologist Dr. Amanda Gummer. While many parents dread the six-week school holiday and the challenge of keeping their kids entertained, Dr. Gummer explains that boredom plays a crucial role in fostering creativity.

Research commissioned by The Works shows the phrase “I’m bored” is repeated 126 times in nearly half of households during the summer holidays. The same survey reveals that 82% of parents feel overwhelmed by the pressure to find activities, yet 40% are concerned about limiting their children’s screen time.

Dr. Gummer states, “Boredom is a brilliant springboard for creativity. When children aren’t constantly provided with entertainment, they are more likely to tap into their imaginations, generate ideas, and discover their true interests. With just a few simple resources, families can transform ‘I’m bored’ into ‘Look what I made!’ That’s where the magic happens.”

To help combat holiday boredom, The Works has created ‘The Boredom Board,’ featuring three children representing different roles: five-year-old Jaskirat as Chief Family Officer, seven-year-old Freddie as Head of Rainy Days, and seven-year-old Coco-Rae as Outdoor Activity Director.

Gavin Peck, CEO of The Works, shared, “We’re excited to launch The Works’ Boredom Board with these young experts. Though small in size, they have big ideas and a mission to support families throughout the UK with practical solutions and product recommendations for when boredom hits this summer. Boredom in the summer break is a serious matter, and who better to lead the charge than the kids themselves?”
