Prue Leith Embraces New Chapter with No Regrets After Bake Off Departure

Prue Leith, the much-loved restaurateur and broadcaster, has opened up about her decision to leave The Great British Bake Off after nine memorable years. At 86, Prue says she has “no regrets” and is embracing a fresh chapter in her life.

Having joined the popular baking show in 2017 when it transitioned from the BBC to Channel 4, Prue quickly became a cherished judge alongside Paul Hollywood. Last month, she announced her exit, making way for TV chef and author Nigella Lawson, who will join Paul in the upcoming season.

Speaking on ITV’s Lorraine, Prue shared insights about her new book, Being Old and Learning to Love It, which tackles the realities and joys of growing older. Reflecting on her departure from Bake Off, she explained that the decision was motivated by a desire to enjoy more personal freedom — particularly the opportunity to travel to Europe during summers, something she missed out on while filming.

“I suddenly realised I will never again have a summer holiday in Europe,” Prue said. “I just thought, ‘I want to do that.’ This year, I’m taking the whole family to France for a week, something I never could have done before.”

Lorraine Kelly commented on Prue leaving the show while still passionate and vibrant, to which Prue responded, “It was important to leave Bake Off while I still have enough energy to enjoy my life. I think there are a lot of older people having a good time — it’s not all misery and gloom.”

Beyond her book, Prue is currently finishing filming the third series of her show, Cotswold Kitchen, and admits she won’t miss the early morning starts Bake Off demanded. Her memoir offers a candid and uplifting perspective on aging, addressing common concerns while highlighting the pleasures and advantages of later life.

Prue emphasizes that aging should not be feared, but embraced with the same spirit and enjoyment as any other stage of life. Her honest reflections and new projects demonstrate she is not stepping away from the spotlight — just turning the page to a new, fulfilling adventure.
