Protesters Rally at RAF Fairford Against US Bombing of Iran

Demonstrators convened outside RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire to voice their opposition to the United States’ bombing campaign targeting Iran. The base has become a staging ground for US forces conducting military operations in the region.

On March 6, a US bomber equipped to carry 24 cruise missiles landed at RAF Fairford, joining three others already stationed there. In response, peaceful protesters gathered the following day, holding placards and flags to express their disapproval of the conflict and urge the British government to reconsider its involvement.

Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer has condemned the war, describing it as an illegal campaign initiated by the US and Israel without endorsements from the US Congress, the United Nations, or NATO. Despite this, the UK has permitted the use of its bases to support what it calls “defensive” US action against Iranian missile sites.

The conflict escalated after more than a week of US and Israeli strikes on Iran, provoking retaliatory attacks by Tehran across the region, including strikes on the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and even an RAF base in Cyprus.

Chris Cole from Drone Wars UK, an organization opposing the use of armed drones, joined approximately 60 protesters outside the base. He emphasized the importance of public dissent, stating, “It’s vital that people stand up and say no to what’s happening. We are here to represent the public’s disagreement with this conflict.”

Gloucestershire Constabulary affirmed their commitment to facilitating lawful and peaceful protest while maintaining public order. In a statement, they highlighted the balance between supporting democratic rights and ensuring the wider community’s daily lives are not unduly disrupted. They confirmed ongoing coordination with protest organizers and readiness to respond should larger crowds assemble, although attendance is not expected to be significant.
