The Coalhouse Inn, a traditional pub nestled on the scenic banks of the River Severn in Gloucestershire, will close its doors this Sunday, 30 August, for the remainder of the year. The pub, famed for its peaceful gardens and picturesque views of the Malvern Hills, typically welcomes visitors from spring through to late summer but must pause operations during the winter months due to flooding caused by the tidal Severn.
Located just five miles south of the medieval town of Tewkesbury, this 16th-century establishment offers an idyllic setting for locals and visitors alike to enjoy real ales and fine food. However, seasonal flooding renders the pub inaccessible over winter, with floodwaters often spanning up to two miles and resulting in road closures. This annual natural challenge means the pub will not reopen until the weather improves next summer.
Family-run for four decades by Kay McDonald, aged 67, and her partner Steve Taylor, 70, who has been involved for 22 years, the Coalhouse Inn prides itself on providing a true traditional pub experience. Steve noted, “We’ve had a fantastic season this year with strong demand, including visitors from Bath and Bristol. People often have to book a week in advance.” The couple’s commitment is also reflected in their efforts to repair flood damage when required, often at personal expense, due to a lack of insurance coverage and external assistance.

In addition to its unique setting, the pub is home to a 14-year-old Shetland pony named Dodger, who serves as its beloved mascot. Steve emphasised the pub’s character: “We don’t have TVs or jukeboxes. Our focus is on serving good beers and ciders at reasonable prices, offering a welcoming atmosphere where guests feel like more than just a table number.”
While the pub usually opens from Easter until September, this year the season ends slightly earlier to prepare for the harsh winter period. The owners stress the importance of readiness to ensure a strong return next year. “We’ve enjoyed some glorious weather, but the seasons are turning, so it’s time to close up and recover,” Steve added.
For those wishing to visit before the winter closure, the Coalhouse Inn will remain open this weekend. It is situated on Gabb Lane in Apperley, approximately 10 miles north of Gloucester. The pub invites patrons to enjoy their hospitality once more before the riverside retreat hibernates until the warmer months return.
