Princess Kate to Resume International Travel with Solo Italy Visit

Princess Kate, the Princess of Wales, is set to make a significant return to international travel with her first official solo overseas visit since her cancer remission was announced early last year. Next week, she will travel to Italy for a two-day trip, focusing on early childhood development as part of her work with The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood.

This visit to Reggio Emilia in northern Italy, from May 13 to 14, is her first extended foreign tour in nearly three and a half years and underscores a key moment in both her recovery and her royal duties. Known for championing early years’ issues, the princess will explore the renowned Reggio Emilia Approach—an educational philosophy that highlights children’s potential for self-development through nurturing and natural environments.

A Kensington Palace spokesperson shared that Kate is “very much looking forward” to the trip, which aims to integrate the Centre’s Shaping Us Framework with leading global approaches. The visit will spotlight the crucial role of loving relationships and supportive environments in fostering healthy childhood development, laying the groundwork for future resilience and well-being.

Although Kate made several brief trips since December 2022, including visits to Boston, Marseille, and Jordan, these were not classified as official overseas tours. This Italy visit represents her return to formal international engagements.

The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, founded by Kate in 2021, focuses on raising awareness about how early experiences shape society and commissioning key research. Coinciding with this trip, Kate recently launched a new 109-page resource at the University of East London titled Foundations for Life, designed to support practitioners and volunteers working with young children and families. The guide emphasizes the importance of social and emotional development in early childhood.

In her foreword, Kate highlights that “our earliest relationships, experiences and environments lay the foundations for our future health and happiness,” emphasizing how by age five, a child’s brain has grown to 90% of its adult size. The Centre intends to collaborate with early years leaders to embed these insights into training and professional development.

New research from the centre also reveals the challenges many parents face in accessing consistent, clear guidance about child development, often encountering mixed messages that can cause confusion and uncertainty during critical early years.

While the Prince of Wales plans to attend the FIFA World Cup in the US this July, it remains unclear if Princess Kate will join him. Nevertheless, her upcoming Italy visit signals her readiness to reengage with international royal duties following her cancer treatment and remission announcement in January 2025.

Since her diagnosis and chemotherapy earlier this year, Kate has been gradually resuming her royal responsibilities, including supporting the King at various state visits and marking important family celebrations. Her return to official foreign tours marks a hopeful new chapter for the Princess of Wales.
