Princess Eugenie Honours Late Queen Elizabeth II in Naming Daughter

Princess Eugenie has announced the name given to her first daughter, born on 3 August in Lisbon, Portugal. The newborn, weighing 6lb 9oz, is the third child of Princess Eugenie and her husband Jack Brooksbank.

Taking to Instagram, Eugenie shared that their daughter’s full name is Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank, chosen in tribute to “three people we love and admire past and present.” The name pays homage to the late Queen Elizabeth II, the princess’s great-grandmother, as well as reflecting both English and Portuguese heritage-two countries significant to the family.

The name Adelaide is believed to be inspired by Queen Adelaide, the wife of King William IV, and Maria Adelaide of Portugal, linking the family’s English and Portuguese roots. Meanwhile, the middle name Annina holds a personal significance to Eugenie and Jack, although the details of this connection have not been disclosed.

Adelaide joins her older brothers, August, aged five, and Ernest, aged three, affectionately known as Augie and Ernie.

Eugenie expressed her joy and gratitude in a heartfelt Instagram post alongside new photographs of baby Adelaide. She wrote: “Two weeks ago today we welcomed our girl to the world. Since then, we’ve enjoyed the most special, cosy, and love-filled time. We are so happy to share Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank’s name, chosen after loved ones who inspire us and reflecting the history of places dear to us. Augie and Ernie are already the best big brothers.”

The birth of Princess Eugenie’s daughter in Portugal marks a rare instance of a British royal family member being born overseas, highlighting the couple’s strong connections to the country alongside their life in the UK.
