Princess Diana’s Poignant Letter Reveals Her Loneliness After Wedding

A recently uncovered letter written by Princess Diana just two days following her 1981 wedding to Prince Charles offers a rare and touching glimpse into her emotional state during those early days in the royal household. Addressed to Mark Simpson, a Buckingham Palace footman, the intimate note is part of a collection soon to be auctioned by Julien’s Auctions at The Peninsula Beverly Hills on June 26.

Dated July 31, 1981, the letter reveals Diana’s feelings of loneliness and her gratitude for the kindness and companionship Mark provided during a challenging transition. She writes:

“Dear Mark, I just wanted to thank you for all your kindness + patience you’ve showed towards me since I moved into B.P. My stay was made so much easier by your company as it was so terribly lonely + we had so many laughs for that I can’t thank you enough.

“Do hope you were able to enjoy Wednesday + that you liked my dress? I’m off to Britannia tomorrow, what with all those men around. I will have to keep a watchful eye on Evelyn!

“The bad news is that I haven’t eaten any cereal - sob. How am I going to cope without my bowls of cereal….A large thank you for being you - Much love, Diana.”

Martin Nolan, co-founder and executive director of Julien’s Auctions, told People magazine that the letter “speaks volumes” about Diana’s experience during her early days in Buckingham Palace. He explained that the princess was navigating the intimidating world of royalty, learning traditions from the Queen and Queen Mother, all while coping with a profound sense of isolation.

What stands out in the letter is the warmth and camaraderie Diana shared with Mark, who was close in age and provided much-needed comfort. Her whimsical lament about missing bowls of cereal underscores the simple comforts she left behind and highlights the human side of a woman soon to become a global icon.

This letter is not just a piece of royal memorabilia—it is a window into the personal struggles of a young princess adjusting to life in the spotlight, making it a deeply moving artifact treasured by collectors and admirers alike.
