Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, celebrated her 76th birthday on 15 August 2024, a milestone marked in the backdrop of ongoing transformations within the British monarchy. Though she has largely refrained from publicly discussing Prince Harry and Meghan Markle since their departure from royal duties in 2020, a past interview with CBC in 2024 suggested she holds cautious views on the couple’s integration into royal life.
During the interview, Princess Anne was asked about the idea of a “slimmed-down” monarchy, a concept associated with King Charles' plans for the future of the royal family. Anne remarked: “Well, I think the ‘slimmed-down’ (monarchy) was said in a day when there were a few more people around to make that seem like a justifiable comment. I mean, it doesn’t sound like a good idea from where I’m standing, I have to say. I’m not quite sure what else, you know, we can do.”
Though rarely seen together in public appearances, it has been reported that Princess Anne anticipated Meghan Markle’s relatively brief tenure within the royal circle. According to royal commentator Neil Sean, Meghan initially sought advice from the Princess Royal upon joining the family. Princess Anne emphasised the importance of commitment to royal duties, explaining that being part of the monarchy is a job requiring punctuality, thorough preparation, and immersion in charitable causes.
