Princess Anne paid a heartfelt visit to Royal Liverpool University Hospital on Tuesday to recognize and support the emergency responders who managed the aftermath of a tragic car incident during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade. The accident, which occurred on Water Street, injured 65 people, including children, with more than 50 receiving treatment in various hospitals.
During her visit, the Princess Royal met with nurses, consultants, paramedics, firefighters, and Liverpool FC representatives. She was briefed by Marc Lucky, Divisional Medical Director for Surgery at Aintree University Hospital, who praised the outstanding response efforts. “It’s a very good example of resilience and people volunteering. We had too many people, which is a very interesting complaint to have,” he said, underscoring how the staff managed the crisis efficiently.
Consultant Jay Rathore informed Princess Anne that the majority of injuries were limb-related and fortunately not life-threatening. First responders Susan McCormick and Gary Fitzpatrick shared their firsthand experiences, highlighting the importance of pre-planned emergency procedures, which were effectively carried out during the incident.

As patron of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, Princess Anne’s visit also acknowledged the courage and hard work of frontline workers during this difficult time. Liverpool City Council leader Liam Robinson expressed gratitude for her presence, noting the significance of her support to the local community.
Buckingham Palace issued a statement reflecting the Princess’s condolences and admiration for those providing care: “Her Royal Highness wishes to acknowledge the courage of the emergency services and all those offering comfort during this challenging period.”
The incident prompted the cancellation of a planned photo exhibition celebrating Cunard’s 185th anniversary, coinciding with the docking of the ship Queen Anne, which Princess Anne was scheduled to board.
Members of the Royal Family have also expressed their sympathy. King Charles and Queen Camilla highlighted the strength of Liverpool’s community spirit in a statement conveying their shock and sorrow. Prince William and Princess Kate extended their thoughts and thanks via social media, while the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, shared a message of support and gratitude toward emergency personnel.
A 53-year-old man has been charged in connection with the incident on suspicion of attempted murder, dangerous driving, and drug-driving, as investigations continue.
