Prince William, the Prince of Wales, recently shared insights into the parenting decisions he and Kate Middleton face, particularly around their children’s use of mobile phones. Speaking in a video with broadcaster Luciano Huck during a visit to Brazil for the Earthshot Prize ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, William revealed that keeping phones away from their 12-year-old son, Prince George, and his siblings has become a “tense issue” in their family.
William explained, “Our children don’t have phones. I think when George moves on to secondary school, then maybe he might have a phone that has no internet access.” He highlighted concerns over unrestricted internet exposure for children, emphasizing the importance of monitoring what they can see online. “It’s getting to the point where it’s becoming a little bit of a tense issue. But I think he understands why, we communicate why we don’t think it’s right.”
In addition to discussing screen time limits, William shared that he actively participates in family life. “I’m the taxi driver, Luciano,” he joked, referring to his role in school runs, attending sports days, and playing in the garden with his children alongside Kate. “She probably does the bulk of it,” he added, underscoring their shared parenting duties.

William also touched on the emotional challenges the family has faced in recent years, especially with the health diagnoses of his father, King Charles III, and his wife. “Every family has its own difficulties and challenges,” he said. He stressed the importance of open communication with their children, even if it means sometimes “oversharing.” “There’s no manual for being a parent. You’ve just got to go with a bit of instinct.”
During the trip, Rio’s city council declared William an honorary citizen of Rio de Janeiro, or ‘carioca,’ praising his dedication to humanitarian and environmental causes. William expressed his deep commitment to leaving a better planet for future generations, saying, “The world I want to pass on to my children is one that I would have loved to inherit when I was a child.”
