Primark Recalls £8 Pepper Mills Over Dangerous Lead Contamination

Primark has announced an urgent recall of three variants of its popular £8 pepper mills due to dangerous levels of lead found in the product. The recall affects brown and green hand-grinding pepper mills manufactured in India and sold across the UK.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards issued a safety alert highlighting that the pepper mills contain lead concentrations exceeding legal limits under the REACH Enforcement Regulations 2008. Because of this serious chemical hazard, Primark has instructed customers to cease using the product immediately and return it to any Primark store for a full refund.

The £8 mills gained popularity on social media, with fans dubbing them “Addison Ross inspired” and praising their design. However, now shoppers must act quickly to protect their health.

Lead exposure poses serious health risks. According to the safety alert, short-term high lead exposure may cause stomach upset, mood changes, headaches, hallucinations, and in extreme cases, brain and kidney damage. Long-term lower-level exposure can lead to anemia, high blood pressure, nervous system issues, and reproductive harm. Pregnant women, infants, and young children are especially vulnerable to lead’s harmful effects, potentially facing miscarriage, developmental delays, lower IQ, and nerve damage.

Lead levels in UK food, water, and air are strictly controlled to minimize risks, but contaminated products like these pepper mills present avoidable hazards.

If you have the affected pepper mills, stop using them immediately and return them to Primark for a full refund. For health concerns related to lead exposure, contact your GP or NHS 111 for advice.
