Cheltenham Town manager Steve Cotterill reflected on his team’s performance in the 2-0 FA Cup defeat to Leicester City, commending the players’ effort against a superior opponent while expressing frustration over the January transfer window’s timing.
Cotterill praised his squad’s commitment and tactical discipline against a team packed with polished, Premier League-quality players. Although disappointed by the two goals conceded, especially the second just before halftime which he described as a “killer,” he felt the team’s effort was commendable throughout. He noted Cheltenham had promising moments and believed scoring one of those opportunities could have altered the game’s momentum and lifted the players' confidence.
The manager acknowledged the absence of key players Ethan Archer, Isaac Hutchinson, and Hakeeb Adelakun but remained focused on the squad available, praising their work ethic despite recent heavy fixture periods and difficult conditions. Cotterill also lauded the support from nearly 7,000 fans at the fully-packed stadium and the sustained backing from the club’s loyal supporters.

Highlighting George Nurse’s debut, Cotterill described the young player’s performance as steady and saw potential in his left foot to open up the pitch. Nurse had only recently joined and participated in limited training, yet Copterill was optimistic about his future. Similarly, Jake Bickerstaff, a recent permanent signing, showed effort but lacked the “devilment” Cotterill expects, though the level of opposition was taken into account.
On the transfer window, Cotterill criticized its structure as “ridiculous,” explaining how the first and last weeks are hectic while the middle period sees little business due to clubs, players, and agents all evaluating options. He urged that the window open earlier and close sooner to better accommodate the football calendar, especially given the congested fixtures at January’s end.
Reflecting on Tommy Taylor’s loan spell, Cotterill expressed gratitude for his contribution, noting his 11 to 12 appearances and first EFL goal. He wishes Taylor regular playing time back at his parent club and believes the player will always have fond memories of Cheltenham.
Looking ahead, Cotterill emphasized the importance of patience and strategic planning in the transfer market as Cheltenham aims to build on their recent progress and finish the league season as strongly as possible amid ongoing squad transitions.
