Popular Rural Motor Rally Faces Opposition Over Environmental Concerns

The Hills Ford Stages, a well-loved motor rally running across rural roads near Ledbury, is encountering opposition from environmental groups concerned about potential harm to the region’s prized scenic landscapes. Scheduled for the weekend of September 13-14, with a ceremonial start on the preceding Friday evening, the event is organised by the historic Cheltenham Motor Club, founded in 1906.

Despite its popularity, key stakeholders such as the Wye Valley and Malvern Hills National Landscape teams have formally objected to the event over fears it may damage the area’s unique natural characteristics. Catherine Laidlaw, a landscape planning officer, highlighted worries including disturbance to the tranquillity and rural character, possible damage to sensitive ecological sites, and disruption to visitors’ enjoyment due to footpath and road closures.

These concerns have been submitted to Herefordshire Council during the consultation process for weekend road closures connected to the rally. In response, Coun Barry Durkin, Cabinet member for transport, acknowledged the issues raised and confirmed that further information has been requested to inform a thorough review before a final decision is made.

On the other hand, organisers and local parish communities largely support the rally. Anouska Lysandrou, Events Secretary for the Cheltenham Motor Club, noted that many residents have expressed positive views, contrasting with a small minority of detractors worried about noise and disturbance.

As the council carefully considers all input, the future of the Hills Ford Stages will balance local enthusiasm with environmental protections to preserve the county’s treasured landscapes.
