Police Boost Presence Ahead of Planned Gloucester Protest

Gloucester residents can expect to see a heightened police presence in the city this weekend as a protest and counter-protest are scheduled to take place in Barnwood on Saturday morning, 22 August.

Gloucestershire Police officers will be deployed to the area to support participants' right to free speech while maintaining the safety of all involved and the wider public. Drivers are advised to anticipate possible delays, particularly around Corinium Avenue and Saw Mills End, where traffic may be slower due to the demonstrations.

Assistant Chief Constable Arman Mathieson stated: “We have engaged with representatives from both protest groups and developed appropriate plans to ensure the events proceed safely, lawfully, and without incident.

“We hope to keep traffic disruption in Barnwood to a minimum and allow residents, workers, and visitors to carry on with their day as smoothly as possible.

“The police role at such events is to protect everyone’s safety while carefully balancing individual rights impartially. We fully respect the freedom to express views and opinions and will facilitate lawful protest. However, any unlawful behaviour intended to disrupt the event or threaten public safety will be dealt with decisively.

“To reassure the community, we are increasing our police presence in Barnwood tomorrow. We encourage anyone with concerns to approach the officers on duty.

“Additionally, anyone with information about planned protests or potential disorder is urged to contact Gloucestershire Police through their online reporting system at https://www.gloucestershire.police.uk/ro/report/ or by calling 101.”
