Police and Crime Commissioner Expresses Disappointment Over Role Abolition

Gloucestershire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, Chris Nelson, has voiced deep disappointment following the government’s announcement to abolish the PCC role, transferring its responsibilities to local mayors and council leaders. Elected in May 2021, Nelson criticized the decision for being made without consultation and cautioned that it could weaken oversight of police conduct at a time when public trust is fragile.

During his tenure, Nelson aimed to implement a zero-tolerance approach to anti-social behavior, secure funding for 200 additional officers, tackle scam calls, and enhance the 101 service. He emphasized the longstanding contribution of PCCs, introduced in 2012, in providing visible and democratically accountable leadership, improving police performance, and supporting victims.

Nelson stated: “PCCs have brought millions in additional funding and united partners to enhance safety in Gloucestershire. Removing PCCs now risks creating a dangerous accountability gap, allowing abuses of police power to remain hidden. Any replacement must guarantee clear, locally rooted leadership to maintain public trust.”

The government plans to abolish the PCC role by 2028, aiming to save £100 million and redirect funds towards neighborhood policing. Policing Minister Sarah Jones argued in Parliament that PCCs have failed to boost public confidence, citing low voter turnout and widespread public unawareness of the role. She asserted that the model has weakened local police accountability and hampered the recruitment of chief constables, contrasting it with the more effective mayoral model for policing governance.

Despite these changes, Nelson pledged to serve out his term, continuing to advocate for Gloucestershire’s communities and public safety.
