Plan to Convert Former Cheltenham Violin Shop into Family Home Near Entertainment Hub

A historic shop situated just opposite Cheltenham’s bustling entertainment complex is set for a transformation into a three-bedroom family home. The Grade II listed building, formerly home to Cheltenham Violins for 23 years until its closure in September last year, now faces a new future.

Located on Henriette Street, adjacent to the popular Brewery Quarter, the property is nestled among renowned venues including Pizza Express, Hollywood Bowl, and Prezzo. The planning application submitted to Cheltenham Borough Council seeks permission to revert the two-storey building from commercial to residential use.

Comprehensive internal renovations are planned to create a comfortable and functional three-bedroom dwelling, featuring a lounge, kitchen, and two bathrooms. The refurbishment aims to blend modern living standards with the preservation and enhancement of the building’s historic character.

Mekkara Architectural Consultants, representing applicant Richard Jones, emphasize the careful selection of materials and replacement doors to maintain the building’s architectural heritage within the conservation area. They highlight that the proposed development will secure the building’s long-term use as a family home, balancing preservation with practical adaptation.

Henriette Street, connecting the lower High Street—home to a Premier Inn—to St Margaret’s Road, where a Holiday Inn stands, benefits from proximity to a vibrant leisure scene. The nearby Brewery Quarter is a focal point for entertainment with Cineworld cinema, popular restaurants like Nando’s and The Botanist, and other amenities such as Tesco Express and Flight Club.

This redevelopment stands as an example of sensitive urban renewal, repurposing a historic commercial space to meet contemporary residential needs, while maintaining the character of Cheltenham’s Central Conservation Area.
