Pensioner Trades Draughty Cottage for Modern Eco-Friendly Home

At 80 years old, Ann Simpson from Tetbury has made an inspiring lifestyle change by exchanging her chilly, gas-heated stone cottage for a brand-new, energy-efficient eco-home just a short walk away. Her decision to downsize and embrace sustainability challenges common perceptions about older homeowners and relocation in later life.

Ann’s previous home, a draughty cottage heated with gas, an Aga, and a woodburner, was costly to maintain and inefficient. Now, at The Limes, a Newland Homes development on London Road, she enjoys a zero-carbon residence rated ‘A’ for energy efficiency and environmental impact. The home features an air source heat pump and solar panels, offering clean energy that significantly lowers running costs.

“I wanted to reduce endless upkeep and save money on bills as I got older,” Ann explains. “I knew little about solar panels or heat pumps but decided to give it a try — and I’m thrilled I did.”

Her move counters findings by Age UK, which reported that 59% of people over 75 are unlikely to move again, often due to perceived difficulties and limited suitable housing options. Despite these common concerns, Ann embraces her new lifestyle confidently. “Moving at 80 has been a learning curve, but I feel I did it just in time,” she says. “I don’t plan to move again.”

Marcus Evans, sales and marketing director at Newland Homes, highlights the benefits of new build homes for older residents. “Modern properties offer adaptability, step-free access, and low maintenance, all near key amenities. Homes like these support independence without compromise. Ann’s story shows that age shouldn’t limit your housing options.”

Ann also appreciates the support from Newland Homes throughout her transition. “The team was brilliant and kind, with a great sense of humour. I’ve felt very supported in this exciting new chapter.”

The Limes development features 45 two, three, and four-bedroom homes, all designed with sustainability in mind. Utilizing renewable energy and traditional Cotswold stone aesthetics, these homes provide a perfect blend of heritage and modern eco-technology, located close to Tetbury’s town centre.

Prices start from £295,000 for a two-bedroom detached house. Tailored appointments are available daily.
