Penny Lancaster’s Menopause Struggle: Hurling Plates Across the Room

Penny Lancaster, from the TV show Loose Women, shared a candid and startling anecdote from her struggles with the effects of menopause during the Covid-19 lockdown. She revealed an episode where she resorted to throwing dinner plates across the room in a fit of frustration.

In a heart-to-heart with Coleen Nolan on the Loose Women podcast, Penny disclosed the difficulties she faced while grappling with a health issue. She recounted a particularly trying incident when she hit a low point while preparing a meal for her spouse, Sir Rod Stewart, and their two sons, Alastair and Aidan.

Penny confessed, “One of my hugest disasters wasn’t so much the cooking, it was where it ended up, it ended up on the walls.”

Elaborating on the situation, she attributed her outburst to her struggle with menopause: “It was during lockdown when I was going through the menopause, I went through a depression and I’d made this dinner for my boys and my husband and I was calling out and calling out because it was endless breakfast, lunch and dinner forever.”

As her family failed to respond to her calls, Penny’s frustration mounted. When her husband and sons finally walked into the kitchen, she lost control: “I was fed up that they weren’t coming down when I’d asked them, and then finally when they walked into the kitchen I’d had enough, I literally picked up the plates and burst into tears and threw them across the kitchen, so the dinner’s ended up on the walls and I’d ended up on the floor in a crumpled mess.”

Recalling the aftermath, Penny shared Rod’s quick response to comfort her: “Rod just went ‘boys quick, just leave mummy, leave mummy, give her a minute’ and he came over to me and said ‘sorry darling, are you okay?’ and then the boys came in and they all helped to clear up and they were like ‘I’m sorry mummy’.”

Penny has been married to the legendary musician since 2007, having first met him eight years prior at the Dorchester Hotel in London. The couple shares two sons, Alastair Wallace Stewart and Aiden Patrick Stewart.

The NHS notes that menopause typically affects women between 45 and 55, with cases of earlier onset occurring. Leading into menopause, women go through perimenopause, which presents similar symptoms such as anxiety, mood swings, hot flushes, and irregular periods.
