Parents and Pupils Unite Against Proposed Name Change for Historic Marling School in Stroud

A wave of opposition has surged among parents and pupils at Marling School, Stroud’s oldest secondary school, following proposals to rename the historic institution as part of a merger with Lift Schools, a national education trust.

Founded in 1887 and named after Sir Samuel Marling, whose generous donation of £10,000 helped establish the school, Marling School has long been a pillar of local tradition and academic excellence. Now, as discussions advance to integrate Marling into Lift Schools—a trust managing 59 schools across England—concerns over changing its revered name have sparked outrage.

An online petition opposing the rebranding has rapidly gained traction, amassing nearly 1,500 signatures within days. Supporters describe the proposed name change as “dreadful,” “ludicrous,” and a threat to the school’s rich heritage. One petitioner remarked, “Marling’s history is its strength. Renaming it ‘Lift Marling’ diminishes a legacy built over generations.” Another parent expressed pride, stating, “Marling is recognized locally and nationally, and that identity should remain intact. Modernizing the school should never mean erasing its history.”

The school announced the proposed merger in April 2025, highlighting the potential benefits of joining Lift Schools, including access to shared best practices and collaboration with other high-performing secondary schools. Marling also plans to maintain close ties with local grammar schools, promising an enhanced educational experience for students.

However, the suggestion that Marling’s name would change as part of this process has ignited fears that the school’s identity and connection to the community could be compromised. The petition emphasizes that a school’s name is more than a label—it embodies its history, pride, and reputation. “Our children’s school isn’t a branding exercise,” the petition reads. “We urge decision-makers to preserve the original ‘Marling School’ name and consult thoroughly with parents, alumni, and the Stroud community before making any permanent changes.”

Lift Schools acknowledged the community’s concerns and affirmed their commitment to a transparent consultation process. A spokesperson stated, “We value listening to families and communities and invite all voices to participate in upcoming meetings.”

As conversations continue, the steadfast opposition reflects a community determined to safeguard the legacy of a school that has stood for nearly 140 years as a symbol of heritage and academic achievement.
