Overtaking Ban Introduced on A40 Through Lea Village

Overtaking will be prohibited along a stretch of the A40 road running through the village of Lea, near Ross-on-Wye, as part of new safety measures introduced by Herefordshire Council.

The primary route through Lea already has a 30mph speed limit. Now, a traffic regulation order (TRO) extends these restrictions by banning overtaking not only on the A40 but also on the B4222, which will also adopt a 30mph limit southwest of its junction with the A40 in the village centre.

To reinforce the new rules, central white lines on carriageways will be removed, and distinctive “village gateway treatments” will be installed at entry points to signal the start of the restrictions.

Earlier consultations involving police, council officials, local councillors, and residents met with unanimous support. Lea Parish Council and local ward representative Harry Bramer have both backed the initiative.

The changes will coincide with scheduled road resurfacing in Lea, funded by section 106 contributions from recent housing developments in the area. This effort reflects a broader commitment by Herefordshire Council to improve road safety and manage traffic speeds across its villages.

Located on the boundary between Gloucestershire and Herefordshire, Lea lies under five miles from Ross-on-Wye and near the Forest of Dean. The nearby village of Longhope in Gloucestershire hosts the well-known Farmers Boy Inn, a short drive from Lea.
