Overnight Works on A40 Gloucester Road in Cheltenham Spark Disruption Concerns

Concerns have been raised over potential traffic disruption on the A40 Gloucester Road in Cheltenham due to planned overnight roadworks. Starting January 8 and continuing until January 21, excavations near the Arle Court Roundabout will install two high voltage cables. These cables are intended to power the new bus chargers at Swanbrook bus depot, located at the top of Pheasant Lane.

The electrical vehicle chargepoint installer, Envevo, has informed local residents about the works, which will involve lane closures between 7pm and 7am. Gloucestershire County Council’s roadworks map indicates that delays are likely during this period.

Simon Wheeler, a Cheltenham Borough Councillor, expressed concern about the impact on traffic flow. “While this essential work is necessary to provide power to Swanbrook, it risks significant disruption on a very busy road,” he said. “Although the works are overnight, the A40 experiences heavy traffic around 7am and 7pm. It may be necessary to adjust the working hours or explore alternative methods to reduce inconvenience.”

Envevo has assured residents they will strive to minimize disruption throughout the project’s duration. The company has been contacted for further comment.
