Over 60 Miles of Roads Resurfaced and 40,000 Safety Defects Fixed in Gloucestershire

Since the Liberal Democrats assumed leadership at Shire Hall, Gloucestershire has seen significant improvements in its road infrastructure, with over 60 miles of roads resurfaced and 40,000 hazardous road defects repaired. These achievements were highlighted at the Gloucestershire County Council cabinet meeting on November 3, where the “Stronger Future, Built Together” strategy for 2025 to 2029 was also approved.

Joe Harris, Cabinet Member for Highways Maintenance (LD, Cirencester Park), acknowledged the progress but emphasized the need for enhanced communication with residents about ongoing roadworks. “We’ve got lots of roadworks going on around the county at the minute,” he said, underlining the importance of keeping the community informed and engaged.

Harris described the current plan as just the beginning of a sustained effort over the next four years. “Fixing our roads was a key promise, and we are delivering on that commitment. Resurfacing more than 60 roads is a remarkable accomplishment, but there remains much to do, especially as we approach the winter months.”

The council is also working hard to balance financial constraints with its manifesto pledges, prioritizing full resurfacing efforts. “Resurfacing is the best way to restore our roads. Alongside infrastructure work, improving communication is critical,” Harris added. He acknowledged that some criticism stems from past shortcomings in keeping the public updated and pledged a more proactive and compassionate approach moving forward.

Beyond road repairs, the council plans to enhance the county’s public spaces. Harris stressed the importance of maintaining Gloucestershire’s natural beauty, expressing a vision for cleaner, tidier streets free from overgrown verges and damaged signage. “We want Gloucestershire to be beautiful again,” he affirmed.

Moreover, ensuring high-quality repairs by contractors remains a top priority to guarantee lasting improvements for the community.
