Openreach has begun deploying a new full fibre broadband network across Gloucester, set to provide residents and businesses with some of the fastest and most reliable internet speeds in Europe.
This full fibre upgrade, a once-in-a-generation infrastructure enhancement, will enable thousands of local households to connect multiple devices at gigabit-capable speeds. It will also empower businesses to expand their online presence and remain competitive for years to come.
Full fibre technology delivers superior reliability and resilience, offering consistent speeds with fewer service disruptions. Equipped to handle increasing data demands, it promises seamless streaming, gaming, video conferencing, online banking, and customer service experiences with minimal buffering or slowdown during peak usage times.

Martin Williams, Openreach Partnership Director for Gloucestershire, commented: “We’re excited to bring full fibre broadband to Gloucester and want the community to know what to expect. This significant infrastructure project means more engineers, equipment, and service vehicles will be present around town, but we are committed to minimizing disruption as much as possible.”
Williams added, “We will utilize existing ducts and poles wherever possible to limit roadworks and avoid unnecessary street installations. However, in some areas, new poles, underground ducts, and fibre cables will be necessary to ensure the entire community benefits from the upgrade.”
Openreach is dedicated to building the best full fibre network sustainably. As part of its ‘Let’s Reach Zero’ strategy, the company aims to reduce carbon emissions, minimize material use and waste, and protect the environment.
Currently, Openreach’s full fibre network covers over 19 million properties. The company plans to expand coverage to 25 million homes and businesses by the end of 2026, with ambitions to reach up to 30 million by the decade’s end — contingent on supportive investment conditions.
