A significant increase in the diagnosis of gestational diabetes among pregnant women in England has been identified in a recent study, revealing that one in eight expectant mothers are now affected by this condition. Gestational diabetes occurs when pregnancy-related hormonal changes hinder the body’s ability to produce or effectively use insulin. Although the condition typically resolves after childbirth, it can lead to complications during birth and long-term health issues for both mother and baby.
Over the last five years, diagnoses of gestational diabetes have surged by 60%, a concerning trend that experts attribute to factors such as rising obesity rates and an increase in maternal age. The University of Edinburgh, which conducted the study, found particularly sharp rises in diagnoses among women from ethnic minority groups and those residing in deprived areas.
Asian women faced the highest diagnosis rate at approximately 23%, while women living in the most deprived regions had a 14% chance of developing the condition. The study analysed data from NHS maternity records, covering over 2.3 million mothers and 2.8 million births across 184 hospitals in England between 2018 and 2022.

“This is the first time we have managed to estimate the number of women with gestational diabetes in the UK. The rising number of women being diagnosed is concerning and impacts on maternity services delivery which are already challenged. Importantly, gestational diabetes also increases risk of future type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, so better preventative measures are needed to help support these women post partum,” said Professor Rebecca Reynolds, Metabolic Medicine expert at the University of Edinburgh.
Gestational diabetes typically develops during the second or third trimester and is screened for during the first antenatal appointment. Healthcare providers assess risk through detailed questioning and may request a screening test if necessary. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to minimise associated health risks. Management usually involves monitoring blood glucose levels and may require dietary adjustments, medication, or insulin injections.
Affected mothers receive close monitoring throughout pregnancy, and early delivery may be advised if blood sugar is not well controlled or if concerns arise regarding the health of the mother or the baby.
While many women with gestational diabetes experience healthy pregnancies and births, the condition is associated with increased risks such as preterm birth, emergency Caesarean section, and babies being born smaller than the typical gestational size. The study also highlighted that black mothers have higher rates of emergency Caesarean sections, and those living in deprived areas are more likely to give birth prematurely.
Though gestational diabetes usually resolves after childbirth as hormonal balance and insulin function return to normal, it carries long-term implications. Women who have experienced gestational diabetes are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in life, as well as facing a greater likelihood of recurrence in subsequent pregnancies. This underscores the importance of ongoing support and preventative healthcare measures for this group.
