A disused 19th-century railway station near Cheltenham has been transformed into a luxurious haven for train enthusiasts and history lovers alike. Cecilia Chavez-Brandon and her husband, Paul Kirwan, invested over £50,000 to restore Rowden Mill Station, turning it into a unique retreat that blends vintage railway nostalgia with modern comfort.
The couple purchased the 2.7-acre site in Bromyard, North Herefordshire, in 2017 after an extensive search for a special renovation project. Originally closed to passenger services in the 1950s amidst growing automobile travel, the station had fallen into decay. The property included original buildings and a stretch of railway track, which the couple have lovingly restored.
Cecilia, an architect by training, admits they weren’t initially train aficionados but quickly embraced the railway lifestyle. “It’s like stepping back into the 1950s and 60s,” she says. “Guests wake up in authentic train carriages and experience the historic ambiance firsthand.”

The station building, refurbished by previous owners, was reimagined into comfortable accommodation with clever adaptations— the booking office now serves as the kitchen, the waiting room a lounge, and former restrooms are full bathrooms. Additionally, a separate parcel office has been converted into a cozy studio.
Further adding to the charm is an 18-foot-long vintage railway saloon, refurbished with 1960s décor, and a recently launched brake van converted into period-correct lodgings. The couple also maintain over 250 meters of the original railway track, preserving the heritage site’s authenticity.
Guests can enjoy stunning countryside views for £260 a night in the main building or choose the studio or brake van accommodations for slightly less. Since opening to holidaymakers in 2022, the station has drawn a variety of visitors—from railway buffs and former train workers to families fascinated by the history and atmosphere.
Despite setbacks during the 2020 pandemic shutdown, Cecilia and Paul devoted their time to further renovations, including restoring an iconic 1962 British Rail inspection saloon. Their efforts have created a peaceful retreat set amidst meadows, hedgerows, and wildlife ponds, making Rowden Mill Station a rare gem combining rail heritage and natural beauty.
Cecilia reflects, “We didn’t start as train enthusiasts, but now it’s our passion. Guests often arrive with deep railway knowledge, and it’s thrilling to share this special experience with them.”
