Ofsted Celebrates Remarkable Turnaround and Storytelling Excellence at Cotswolds Nursery

Kiddywinks Nursery in Chipping Campden has achieved a ‘Good’ rating from Ofsted across all inspection categories, reflecting a remarkable improvement since its last evaluation. The nursery, located at The Pear Tree Centre on Pear Tree Close, caters to children aged 0 to 4 and currently supports 91 young learners.

During the inspection on March 7, inspectors praised the nurturing environment where children form trusting bonds with staff. They observed that children eagerly enter the setting, quickly settle, and confidently engage in play and learning activities. Babies were seen smiling as they cuddled with their key workers, while older children demonstrated independence in their learning choices.

Leadership and staff at Kiddywinks have shown notable commitment to continuous enhancement, implementing curriculum revisions, staff training, and improvements to the learning environment that effectively address children’s developmental needs.

The nursery, operated by Ranu Ltd and registered in 2023, employs 21 staff members, including eight with Level 3 qualifications, three with Level 2, and five apprentices. The nursery manager holds a Level 6 early years qualification. Kiddywinks offers year-round care from 7:30 am to 6 pm and provides government-funded places.

Ofsted highlighted the nursery’s emphasis on fostering communication and literacy skills through storytelling, particularly in outdoor settings. Older children were observed repeating refrains from familiar stories and engaging creatively by making wands and pretending to fly, enriching their imaginative play.

Inclusivity is a cornerstone of Kiddywinks’ ethos, with staff diligently reviewing individual plans for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Collaboration with external agencies ensures tailored support, facilitating good progress for these children.

Children’s behavior and attitudes stood out positively, with clear expectations and boundaries supporting positive conduct. Staff act as role models, helping children understand the reasons behind rules, and promoting independence at all ages—from toddlers dressing themselves to babies learning to feed and drink independently.

Parents expressed strong support for the nursery, noting effective communication that ensures consistency and fosters strong partnerships in supporting children’s development.

While the inspection acknowledged significant progress, it also identified areas for growth. The newly designed curriculum is still being embedded, and some staff are further developing skills to better challenge and consolidate learning, particularly for the youngest children. Additionally, group activities and room transitions require refinement to minimize disruptions. Staff are encouraged to more actively follow children’s spontaneous interests to enhance learning opportunities.

Overall, inspectors concluded that Kiddywinks Nursery is on an encouraging upward trajectory, with all children making good progress in their development.
