Officer Resigns After Secret Footage Reveals Abuse of Power and Misconduct

A former Metropolitan Police officer secretly filmed expressing enthusiasm for using force against detainees would have been dismissed without notice if he had not already resigned, temporary chief constable Maggie Blyth has confirmed.

PC Peter Greaves was captured on hidden camera during a Panorama investigation at Charing Cross Police Station in November 2024. The footage exposed a troubling culture of racism, Islamophobia, and misogyny within the Met.

Following the revelations, Greaves transferred to Gloucestershire Constabulary in March 2025 after completing vetting in line with the College of Policing’s Authorised Professional Practice and Vetting Code of Practice. However, he resigned in November 2025 amid growing scrutiny.

The controversial documentary, which aired on October 1, 2025, included Greaves admitting he would break detainees’ fingers if they refused to provide fingerprints—a blatant breach of professional ethics.

An investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) led to an accelerated misconduct hearing on January 9 before temporary chief constable Blyth. The hearing concluded that Greaves’ conduct amounted to discreditable behavior and that he would have been summarily dismissed had he not resigned.

His name will now be placed on the Police Barred List maintained by the College of Policing, ensuring he cannot rejoin the police force or be employed by affiliated organizations.

T/CC Blyth stated, “While there is no evidence that former PC Greaves physically harmed members of the public, his shocking comments have caused serious damage to public trust in policing.”

To date, the Metropolitan Police has dismissed seven officers implicated in the Panorama episode and plans to hold another hearing for an officer attached to the detention unit at a future date.

The IOPC’s investigation into the broader allegations at Charing Cross Police Station is ongoing.
