As warmer weather fuels a surge in iced coffee consumption, many people are trying to replicate café-quality drinks at home without breaking the bank. Unfortunately, budget coffee grounds, instant coffee, or supermarket blends often result in iced coffee that tastes bitter or flat — far from the smooth, refreshing beverage enjoyed in coffee shops.
Luke Dalton, a coffee expert from Contact Coffee Co, shares an inexpensive and unexpected tip to enhance the flavor of homemade iced coffee: a tiny pinch of salt. “You don’t need premium beans or fancy gear to improve your iced coffee,” Luke explains. “A small amount of salt balances bitterness, making the coffee taste smoother and sweeter without adding sugar. It’s subtle but transformative.”
It might sound odd, but adding salt to coffee is a long-standing method to reduce bitterness. Salt suppresses harsh bitter notes, allowing the coffee’s natural sweetness and chocolate undertones to shine through. Cheaper coffees often taste harsher due to the roasting process, bean quality, or brewing methods, and these effects can be amplified when the coffee is chilled.

“Iced coffee’s cold temperature can mute some flavor nuances and accentuate bitterness, making it taste flat or harsh,” Luke says. “Just a pinch of salt softens those rough edges, resulting in a more balanced and enjoyable drink.” He cautions to add only a tiny pinch at the end — enough to season the coffee but not enough to detect saltiness.
Besides salt, Luke recommends other affordable ingredients that can elevate your homemade iced coffee:
-
Cinnamon
Adding a sprinkle of cinnamon introduces warmth and a hint of natural sweetness, especially complementary in milk-based iced coffees.
-
Cocoa powder
A dash of unsweetened cocoa powder enhances the chocolate notes already present in many dark roasts, enriching the flavor without extra sugar.
-
Vanilla extract
A few drops of vanilla add subtle sweetness and aroma, offering a simple alternative to sugary syrups.
Luke emphasizes that improving iced coffee doesn’t require expensive syrups or gadgets but simple, small tweaks using everyday pantry items. “Before splurging on new coffee brands, try what’s already in your kitchen cupboard,” he advises. “A pinch of salt costs almost nothing but can make a big difference, turning cheap iced coffee into a smoother, more delicious drink.”
