As colder weather settles in and forecasts predict snow and sub-zero temperatures, many households are searching for ways to manage rising central heating expenses. With heating costs now approximately £600 higher annually than in 2022, finding efficient solutions is more crucial than ever.
Despite recent mild temperatures, the mercury is expected to drop to 0°C by the end of next week in some areas, alongside snowfall. Fortunately, saving money on heating doesn’t require costly measures. Simple adjustments could save over £100 annually.
Consulting over 100 experts on keeping energy bills low revealed a unanimous agreement on the ideal thermostat setting. Nick Duggan, Managing Director at The Radiator Centre, explains, “The ideal room temperature ranges from 18-21°C. Every degree above adds roughly 10% to your heating bill, so ensuring your radiators operate efficiently is key.”

An Octopus Energy spokesperson highlights the importance of proper thermostat use: “Treating your thermostat like an on/off switch or using the boost function wastes energy, as heating systems work harder to rewarm spaces. Maintaining a steady temperature between 18-21°C when heating ensures comfort and efficiency. Simply lowering your thermostat by one degree may save up to £145 a year.”
Fiona Peake, Domestic Finance Expert at Ocean Finance, remarks, “Many believe turning up the thermostat quickly warms the home faster, but boilers work at the same pace regardless of setting. Overshooting temperatures only wastes energy. Instead, keep your thermostat steady at the lowest comfortable range—18-21°C.”
Gav Murray, Director of Heating at Hive, supports this approach: “Hive recommends setting thermostats between 18°C and 21°C, with most users opting for 18°C. Dropping the temperature by just one degree can save around £115 a year, and spring is an ideal time to adopt this strategy.”
Adam Knight, Lead Engineer at BOXT, advises, “Set your thermostat to a consistent, realistic target—around 18-20°C during the day and 16-17°C at night—instead of switching it off.”
Ricky Sharma of Engineering Real Results points out, “Most homes feel comfortable between 18°C and 21°C. Lowering the thermostat by 1°C can reduce bills by roughly 10%, which means about £120 saved annually. Adding layers of clothing instead of raising the temperature is a smart way to stay warm.”
Matthew Sheeran from Money Wellness adds, “Turning down the thermostat by 1°C cuts costs by up to 10%. Using a timer to heat only when needed further prevents energy waste.”
By following these expert recommendations, homeowners can keep warm while significantly reducing their heating bills this winter.
