Northamptonshire Triumphs Over Gloucestershire to Reach T20 Blast Quarter Finals

David Willey led Northamptonshire Steelbacks to a commanding eight-wicket victory over Gloucestershire at the cinch County Ground, Northampton, securing their spot in the Vitality Blast quarter-finals for the second consecutive year.

Willey delivered a captain’s innings of 47 not out after early setbacks, including Chris Lynn leaving the field due to an injury caused by Duan Jansen and Ricardo Vasconcelos being dismissed for 42. His calm and calculated batting anchored Northamptonshire’s chase.

Gloucestershire struggled after a promising start, with Ben Charlesworth shining brightly by scoring a career-best 68 off 38 deliveries. However, his efforts were largely unsupported; only Jack Taylor contributed significantly with 24 runs. Wickets fell regularly, leaving Gloucestershire all out for 152.

Northamptonshire’s bowling attack was led by Ben Sanderson, who recorded his best figures of the season with 4 for 20, while leg-spinner Calvin Harrison impressed with 2 for 23. The Steelbacks struck early, reducing Gloucestershire to 16 for three in the opening overs.

Despite Charlesworth’s aggressive stroke play, including two massive sixes off George Scrimshaw, Gloucestershire lost momentum in the middle overs with a series of quick wickets. The dismissals of Kamran Dhariwal via a brilliant run-out and subsequent wickets curtailed their progress.

In the chase, Nathan McSweeney and Willey opted for a measured approach, focusing on singles and twos to steadily chip away at the target. McSweeney’s dismissal did little to unsettle Willey, who brought home victory with powerful shots, including a six off Duan Jansen that sealed the match.

With this win, Northamptonshire advances to the Vitality Blast Finals Day, keeping their hopes alive for the championship title. Gloucestershire’s tournament hopes, however, end in disappointment.
