Northamptonshire Steelbacks comfortably defeated Gloucestershire by eight wickets in a Vitality Blast quarter-final clash at the cinch County Ground, Northampton. Captain David Willey led the charge with a resolute 47 not out, steering the Steelbacks to victory despite losing teammate Chris Lynn early due to a foot injury caused by Duan Jansen’s delivery.
Gloucestershire’s innings was propelled by Ben Charlesworth, who recorded a career-best T20 score of 68 off 38 balls. However, aside from Jack Taylor’s 24, other batsmen struggled as wickets fell regularly, and the visitors were eventually bowled out for 152.
Northamptonshire’s bowlers were pivotal, with Ben Sanderson picking up season-best figures of 4 for 20 and leg-spinner Calvin Harrison taking 2 for 23. The Steelbacks got an early boost by removing Dawid Malan and Graeme van Buuren within the first two overs. Although D’Arcy Short tried to stabilize the innings with aggressive strokes, he was soon sent back to the pavilion by Sanderson.

Charlesworth’s powerful hitting, including two sixes off George Scrimshaw, helped Gloucestershire reach 100 runs, but the visitors lost momentum quickly when James Sales dismissed Taylor. A series of quick wickets, including a sharp run-out of Kamran Dhariwal, further destabilized Gloucestershire.
In the chase, Northants faced a brief scare when Lynn left the field injured, but Nathan McSweeney’s steady batting alongside Willey ensured no loss of momentum. They relied on singles and twos, patiently building the innings without taking undue risks. McSweeney finally accelerated with a boundary before being dismissed lbw by Short.
Willey finished the match aggressively, hammering a six off Jansen to seal the win for Northamptonshire, who now progress to the Vitality Blast Finals Day for the second consecutive year.
