Northamptonshire End Gloucestershire’s Unbeaten T20 Run with Dominant Win

Northamptonshire Steelbacks all-rounder James Sales showcased a stellar bowling performance, claiming career-best T20 figures of five for 21 to secure a commanding seven-wicket win against Gloucestershire at the cinch County Ground, Northampton. This defeat marked Gloucestershire’s first loss of the Vitality Blast season, as Northants extended their perfect start to three wins from three matches.

Sales set the tone early by striking twice in the powerplay, dismantling the in-form Miles Hammond and dangerous opener D’Arcy Short with accurate full and straight deliveries. Despite Ben Charlesworth’s aggressive 49, Gloucestershire’s innings was disrupted by Sales’ timely double breakthroughs in the 12th over, breaking a crucial 47-run partnership with Ollie Price. Sales then sealed the innings with an LBW dismissal of Charlesworth, helping restrict the visitors to 164 for nine.

Gloucestershire showed resistance in the lower order, but the Steelbacks’ Australian duo, Chris Lynn and Nathan McSweeney, were relentless in their chase. Together they put on a blistering 91 runs in just 8.4 overs. Lynn’s explosive 65 off 36 balls featured multiple powerful shots, including sixes and boundaries, setting a rapid pace. McSweeney contributed a vital 53 before being bowled by Price.

Northants cruised to victory with 22 balls remaining, thanks to the combined efforts of Lynn and McSweeney. Ollie Price’s bowling was a bright spot for Gloucestershire, finishing with two wickets for 28 runs.

This match was a clash of unbeaten sides, but Sales dominated with the ball, and the Australian pair’s batting firepower proved decisive, handing Northants their third consecutive win and putting Gloucestershire on the back foot early in the competition.
