Northamptonshire End Gloucestershire’s Perfect T20 Run with Dominant Win

In a thrilling Vitality Blast clash at the cinch County Ground, Northamptonshire Steelbacks all-rounder James Sales delivered a career-best T20 bowling performance, claiming five wickets for just 21 runs to help seal a commanding seven-wicket victory over Gloucestershire.

Sales was instrumental from the outset, striking twice in the powerplay by dismantling Gloucestershire’s in-form batters. He dismissed Miles Hammond and D’Arcy Short early, both victims of his accurate full-length deliveries, putting the home side on the back foot at 42 for two.

Gloucestershire’s middle order fought back, led by Ben Charlesworth’s aggressive 49, and along with Ollie Price’s steady 20, they rebuilt the innings to reach a respectable 164 for nine. However, Sales continued his onslaught in the middle overs, taking two vital wickets that disrupted the chase.

Northamptonshire’s Australian duo, Chris Lynn and Nathan McSweeney, then smashed a blistering 91-run partnership in just 8.4 overs, overwhelmingly outpacing the required run rate. Lynn blazed his way to 65 runs off 36 balls, while McSweeney supported with a solid 53 before falling just shy of the target.

Lynn’s power hitting included numerous boundaries and sixes, consistently targeting the legside and pushing his team towards victory. Despite a brief reprieve offered by Gloucestershire’s missed catch, the Steelbacks maintained control with calculated aggression.

Ollie Price also contributed with key wickets, ending with figures of two for 28. Northamptonshire’s bowling unit exploited early breakthroughs and effectively stifled Gloucestershire’s lower-order hitters, sealing the win with 22 balls to spare.

This result marks Northants’ third consecutive win in the competition, while Gloucestershire experienced their first defeat of the campaign – ending their previously flawless start.
