No Return for Gloucester Tall Ships Festival in 2027 Despite Docks Bicentenary

Business leaders in Gloucester have confirmed that the iconic Tall Ships Festival will not return to the city in 2027. This decision comes despite plans to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Gloucester Docks with a range of special events.

Since 2007, the Tall Ships Festival has been held biennially at Gloucester Docks, drawing thousands of visitors to experience majestic tall ships alongside live music, immersive entertainment, sail cargo showcases, vintage fairground rides, family activities, and the popular Smugglers’ Market featuring local food and drink producers.

The last festival took place in 2024. While organizers initially postponed the 2026 event to 2027 with intentions to “reimagine” it as part of the bicentenary celebrations, a spokesperson from Gloucester Business Improvement District (BID) has now clarified that no Tall Ships Festival is planned for next year. Instead, the 200th anniversary events at the Docks will unfold under a different banner.

The spokesperson highlighted that the primary obstacle remains extensive silt buildup in the Docks, which prevents tall ships from safely entering the waters. Despite this limitation, the city is gearing up for an exciting six-month program of events throughout 2027. These activities aim to enrich established festivals and introduce new cultural experiences to mark this milestone.

While details of the Gloucester 200 celebrations are still emerging, Gloucestershire Heritage Hub announced in late 2025 a £9,500 grant from the Lloyds Register Foundation to support the anniversary’s planning efforts.

Attempts to obtain a comment from Gloucester City Council regarding the Tall Ships Festival’s future have been made but no statement is available at this time.
