No Return for Gloucester Tall Ships Festival in 2027 Despite Docks' 200th Anniversary

Gloucester’s renowned Tall Ships Festival, a biennial highlight at Gloucester Docks since 2007, will not be returning in 2027, according to city business leaders. Traditionally, the festival has drawn thousands of visitors over three days, featuring majestic tall ships, live music, immersive entertainment, sail cargo showcases, vintage fairground rides, family-friendly activities, and the popular Smugglers’ Market showcasing local food and drink.

The last festival took place in 2024, with plans initially made to postpone the event until 2027 for a reimagined edition coinciding with Gloucester Docks’ 200th anniversary celebration. However, a spokesperson for the Gloucester Business Improvement District (BID) has confirmed that there will be no Tall Ships Festival next year. Instead, a different set of celebrations is being developed under the Gloucestershire Heritage Hub’s guidance, supported by a £9,500 grant from the Lloyds Register Foundation aimed at marking the docks’ bicentenary.

A major factor preventing the festival’s return is the accumulation of silt in the docks, which makes it physically impossible for tall ships to enter the harbor. Despite this setback, organizers are planning a comprehensive six-month calendar of events throughout 2027, combining existing festivals at the docks with new additions to celebrate Gloucester’s maritime heritage and community spirit.

Gloucester City Council has been approached for comment regarding the future of the Tall Ships Festival, but no further details have been released. Meanwhile, the city looks forward to a vibrant 200th anniversary celebration that honors the rich history of the docks in innovative and engaging ways.
