Nine Months of M50 Flooding Repairs to Begin with Overnight Closures and Traffic Delays

Drivers on the M50 motorway are being warned to expect disruptions as a major maintenance project starts to address persistent flooding issues. National Highways is launching a comprehensive scheme that focuses on cleaning, repairing, and clearing vegetation from the drainage systems along both sides of the carriageway between junction 4 of the M50 and junction 8 of the M5.

The work will be conducted overnight, between 8pm and 6am, to minimize the impact on traffic. However, lane closures and some full motorway closures will be necessary during this period. Dan Bothwick, project manager for National Highways, explained, “Flooding has been a recurring problem along this route, so we are taking decisive steps to repair and enhance the drainage infrastructure throughout the motorway’s length.”

Starting Monday, July 28, the maintenance will be carried out in phases to reduce traffic disruption and is expected to continue until April next year. Dan Bothwick added, “We recognize the inconvenience this may cause for road users and local communities, but by scheduling the work overnight, we aim to limit the impact when traffic is lighter. Once the improvements are complete, drivers will benefit from a safer, better-drained carriageway.”

In addition to drainage work, full closures will provide opportunities to perform other essential tasks. These include grass cutting, barrier repairs, sign cleaning, and restoring damaged safety netting between junctions 4 and 3. The team will also evaluate the possibility of resurfacing sections during these closures to avoid further disruptions.

Planned full closures will be supported by clearly marked diversion routes, and motorists are advised to allow extra time for their journeys during these periods.
