Nighttime Road Closure Near Westonbirt Arboretum Sparks 15-Mile Detour

A two-mile section of the A433 Bath Road near Westonbirt Arboretum is closed overnight for resurfacing, creating a significant 15-mile detour for motorists. The closure, running nightly from 8pm to 7am on weekdays, began on Monday, July 6, and will continue for 10 nights until Thursday, July 16, excluding the weekend of July 10 and 11.

The closure affects the stretch between Willesley and Westonbirt, but visitors to the arboretum won’t be disrupted since the site closes early at 4.30pm. Similarly, Westonbirt School’s drop-off and pick-up times remain unaffected due to careful scheduling of the work.

Despite the short length of the closure, drivers needing to travel between the two ends during these hours must follow a detour spanning over 15 miles, which even crosses from Gloucestershire into South Gloucestershire. The official diversion directs traffic from the A433 junction with Bowldown Road north to Tetbury, then west along the A4135 through Beverston and Babdown to the A46 junction. From there, drivers head south for six miles towards Dunkirk before looping back north along the A433 through Didmarton to reach the other end of the closure at Knockdown.

The temporary traffic order strictly prohibits vehicles and pedestrians along the closed road during closure hours, except for emergency access or pedestrian property access where a footway is available. Drivers accustomed to using this route at night should plan alternative travel arrangements accordingly.
