NHS Urges Brits to Take Daily Vitamin D Supplement This Autumn and Winter

As the days grow shorter and sunlight becomes scarce, the NHS is advising all UK residents to take a daily vitamin D supplement throughout autumn and winter. This essential nutrient plays a vital role in maintaining healthy bones, supporting the immune system, and overall wellbeing. Since natural vitamin D production decreases due to reduced sun exposure in these months, supplementation is crucial to prevent deficiencies.

The NHS recommends that adults and children over one year old take a daily vitamin D tablet of 10 micrograms (400 IU) from October to March. Those who are shielding, have darker skin, are pregnant, or breastfeed may need to take vitamin D supplements all year round, as they are at higher risk of deficiency.

By following this straightforward advice, individuals can help protect themselves against illnesses and promote better health during the colder, darker seasons.
