NHS Issues Warning on Safe Use of Paracetamol with Other Medications

The NHS has issued a vital warning about the safe use of paracetamol, a common over-the-counter painkiller, due to potential risks when combined with specific medications. Many people across the UK rely on paracetamol to alleviate headaches, back pain, colds, and other minor ailments. However, caution is advised to avoid dangerous interactions.

One key concern is the use of paracetamol in conjunction with warfarin, a blood-thinning medication. The NHS advises individuals on warfarin to consult their GP before taking paracetamol, as it may increase the risk of bleeding. While taking low doses of paracetamol with warfarin is generally safe, exceeding four 500mg tablets within 24 hours over several days can slow blood clotting and heighten bleeding risks.

Another risk involves accidentally doubling up on paracetamol by taking it with combination medicines such as co-codamol or certain cold and flu remedies that also contain paracetamol. Overdose can occur if these are taken together unknowingly. On the other hand, pain relievers like ibuprofen, aspirin, and codeine do not contain paracetamol and can typically be taken safely alongside it.

People undergoing treatment for epilepsy or tuberculosis (TB) are also advised to speak with their GP before using paracetamol, as interactions may present additional hazards. While herbal remedies and supplements generally do not affect paracetamol, the NHS cautions that there is insufficient information about their safety in combination with the painkiller. Patients should inform their healthcare provider about all medicines and supplements they are taking.

When used correctly, paracetamol rarely causes adverse effects. Serious allergic reactions are extremely uncommon but require immediate emergency attention. Users should always follow dosage instructions carefully and consult the packaging leaflet for detailed information.

By following NHS guidance, individuals can safely benefit from paracetamol while minimizing the risks associated with medication interactions.
