NHS Identifies 8 Groups Who Should Avoid Ibuprofen

Ibuprofen is a popular over-the-counter painkiller, commonly found in pharmacies and supermarkets throughout the UK. Known for its ability to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and ease symptoms of colds, flu, and Coronavirus, it is a trusted remedy for many.

However, ibuprofen is not suitable for everyone. The NHS highlights eight specific groups who should consult a healthcare professional before taking this non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID).

These groups include:

  1. Anyone with a history of allergic reactions to ibuprofen, aspirin, or other NSAIDs like naproxen should avoid it completely.
  2. Pregnant women are advised against using ibuprofen unless directed by a doctor.
  3. Individuals with kidney problems need medical guidance before taking ibuprofen.
  4. Those with asthma should consult a healthcare provider as ibuprofen may aggravate breathing issues.
  5. People suffering from stomach ulcers require caution and professional advice prior to use.

The NHS recommends always reading the medication leaflet to understand the correct dosage and usage. Typically, adults may take one or two 200mg tablets or capsules up to three times a day, ensuring at least six hours between doses. Stronger doses are only prescribed under medical supervision.

If you are currently on specific medicines, consult your doctor before taking ibuprofen to prevent any adverse reactions. Long-term use, especially beyond six months for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, may require protective medication to safeguard the stomach.

Similarly, paracetamol, another common pain reliever, is not suitable for everyone and should be taken with caution by those with certain conditions. Generally, most people aged 16 and over, including pregnant or breastfeeding women, can use paracetamol safely, but medical advice is recommended if unsure.

Always seek professional advice when in doubt about pain relief options to ensure safe and effective treatment.
