NHS GP Recommends Espresso as a Post-Meal Drink to Aid Digestion

An NHS GP has endorsed espresso as a beneficial drink to support digestion after meals. In a TikTok video, Dr Karan Raj (@dr.karanr) discussed a suggestion from Italian chef Gino D’Acampo to choose espresso over cappuccino after eating – advice the doctor agrees with.

Dr Raj explains, “An espresso is an ideal post-meal digestive aid because it’s a small volume of concentrated coffee without milk.” The caffeine and bitter compounds in espresso stimulate stomach acid production and activate the vagus nerve, enhancing gut motility and helping to jumpstart digestion.

Unlike larger milk-based coffees like cappuccinos, which contain fat, protein, and lactose, espresso doesn’t slow gastric emptying. Milk stimulates hormones like cholecystokinin and secretin, which prolong digestion and can lead to feelings of fullness and bloating – especially in those sensitive to lactose.

An espresso typically contains 30 to 40 ml of coffee, delivering a potent digestive boost without overfilling the stomach. For those who prefer to avoid coffee, Dr Raj suggests peppermint tea as an alternative, noting that its menthol content relaxes intestinal muscles and promotes gut motility. He also recommends a “fart walk” to aid digestion naturally.

Beyond digestive benefits, recent research suggests espresso may contribute to cognitive health. A 2023 University of Verona study found compounds in espresso coffee that help inhibit proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease development. Additionally, multiple studies link moderate coffee consumption to increased longevity and reduced risk of death from various causes, including cancer.

Whether you enjoy espresso as a digestive aid or simply appreciate its flavor, it might be worth trying it after your next meal to support gut health.
