NHS GP Highlights Surprising Menopause Symptom: When Bloating Could Signal More Serious Issues

Dr Nighat Arif, a respected NHS GP with over 15 years of experience and a specialist in women’s health, has opened up about a commonly overlooked yet significant symptom: sudden changes in bloating and gut health during menopause. Sharing her insights with her 320,000 TikTok followers, she emphasized how these symptoms—ranging from bloating, gas, constipation to sudden diarrhea—aren’t just inconvenient; they could indicate serious health conditions, including cancer.

“Can we talk about the unexpected menopause symptom that nobody discusses? I admit I haven’t talked about this enough,” Dr. Arif said. She explained that hormonal fluctuations during menopause affect the gut-brain axis, meaning hormones impact not only menstrual cycles but also gut motility and tolerance. This connection explains why some women suddenly experience digestive changes that feel confusing and alarming.

Importantly, Dr Arif warns that these symptoms aren’t exclusive to women; men should also stay alert to sudden digestive changes, as some symptoms overlap with signs of cancers such as bowel or ovarian cancer.

She described her clinical experience, stating, “One day you might be constipated, the next day experiencing diarrhea, wondering what is going on with your body. This pattern is very common, especially around perimenopause and menopause.” Dr Arif admitted her surprise at how frequently she encounters this issue, noting, “Even as a clinician, I’m dumbfounded by how common it is, yet these symptoms are often overlooked, largely because they can be embarrassing.”

The GP stresses the importance of not ignoring persistent symptoms like ongoing bloating, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, or sudden severe abdominal pain. “These can be red flags for urgent issues like bowel cancer or ovarian cancer. I’m not saying this to cause panic, but awareness and proper medical evaluation are crucial. We should always rule out other causes besides hormonal changes.”

For those experiencing benign symptoms of bloating and digestive discomfort related to hormonal shifts, Dr Arif suggests consulting a healthcare professional for proper testing and guidance.
