A vibrant new dining destination has opened its doors at Gloucester Food Dock, bringing authentic South Indian street food to the city’s bustling waterfront.
Mazala Dosa, which was announced almost a year ago, has become the latest addition to the Food Dock’s diverse collection of independent eateries. Joining twelve other establishments offering a range of global cuisines, including Thai, Japanese, Mexican, Italian and Americana, Mazala Dosa promises to offer something distinctively South Indian.
Since opening on 1 September, customers have been able to enjoy classic street food favourites such as dosa, vada, uthappam and kothu, all served in a stylish two-floor setting. The restaurant combines South Indian design elements with the unique character of Gloucester Docks’ Victorian architecture, exposed brickwork and timber beams, creating an inviting atmosphere.

Overlooking the docks, Mazala Dosa boasts stunning views and embraces modern dining innovation. Notably, it is among the first restaurants in Gloucestershire to utilise autonomous robots to help deliver dishes to tables, enhancing the customer experience.
Owner Omer Rahim expressed his excitement about the venture: “We’re thrilled to bring the rich flavours and traditions of South Indian cuisine to Gloucester Food Dock. Our goal is to craft an experience that marries authentic food, warm hospitality, and cutting-edge technology, all set within one of the county’s most unique waterside locations.”
Prior to opening, Omer shared his motivation for establishing Mazala Dosa at the Food Dock. Having lived in the UK for over twenty years, he observed that South Indian cuisine is underrepresented. “South Indian food is healthy, fermented, and excellent for digestion,” he said in a video posted on the restaurant’s Instagram page. “I wanted to introduce these flavours to people in the UK. Sharing the stories behind authentic South Indian food is important to us, and we believe the best way to do that is through cooking for our customers.”
Ken Elliott, co-founder of Gloucester Food Dock, welcomed Mazala Dosa to the community, stating: “Mazala Dosa is a fantastic addition to our growing family of independent food businesses. Its combination of authentic South Indian cuisine, breathtaking dockside views and innovative technology offers visitors something truly new and exciting at The Food Dock.”
Mazala Dosa is now open at Unit 13, Gloucester Food Dock, welcoming guests from 12pm to 9pm, Tuesday through Sunday.
