New Show for Antiques Roadshow Fans Explores Eccentric Country Houses

Auctioneer Angus Ashworth is set to debut a captivating new historical series perfect for fans of The Repair Shop and Antiques Roadshow.

Angus Ashworth: Yorkshire Heritage Hero premieres on November 24 on Really. Angus shared exclusive insights with Reach publications about what viewers can expect from the show.

Echoing the charm of BBC’s Repair Shop, the series follows Angus as he travels across Yorkshire, visiting some of the region’s grandest country houses. He works closely with families striving to preserve their aging estates and protect these unique homes for future generations.

Using his expert knowledge, Angus identifies essential repairs and secures restoration funding by discovering valuable hidden items within the properties. These treasures are then auctioned, much like on Antiques Roadshow.

Angus explained the challenges many families face: “Many are finding it harder than ever. There’s a heavy responsibility on each generation’s shoulders.”

“In recent years, many homes that have been in the same family for hundreds of years are being put up for sale. The pressure of stewardship becomes overwhelming.”

“It’s a privilege to live in these houses, but they come with significant challenges.”

In one memorable episode, the lady of the house is shown cleaning toilets after hosting a wedding, dispelling myths about grand estates being staffed like Downton Abbey. Angus noted, “Some houses have a few staff members, but those extravagant days are long gone.”

“To generate income, many estates host events, which they manage late into the night,” he added. “It’s fascinating to see the lengths they go to maintain these properties.”

This quintessentially British series will delight history buffs and fans of traditional crafts alike.

Angus also enjoyed a unique perspective while surveying estates from a vintage aircraft: “At first, I thought it was just a gimmick, but seeing the properties from the air gave me a whole new appreciation. It’s a perspective we don’t usually get.”
