New Roadworks to Begin Near Gloucester as Key A38 Junction Improvements Progress

Further roadworks are set to commence close to Gloucester city centre as part of a vital project to improve traffic flow around the expanding Hunts Grove residential area. Midlands-based civil engineering firm O’Brien Contractors has been appointed to execute critical junction improvements at the Hunts Grove development in Hardwicke, Gloucestershire.

Having started earlier this year, the works are scheduled for completion in 2025. They are designed to support the ongoing growth of the Hunts Grove community, located about seven kilometres south of Gloucester city centre.

The Section 278 infrastructure project focuses on easing congestion and enhancing access for residents by creating a new entrance connecting Hunts Grove to the A38 and B4008 roads. Additionally, the scheme will involve the introduction of traffic signals at the Cross Keys roundabout further south to improve traffic management.

Key aspects of the works include earthmoving activities, stabilising a slipped embankment, utility relocations, carriageway planing and resurfacing, upgraded drainage systems, installation of new services, traffic signals, streetlighting, and the addition of cycle-safe parapets on the flyover.

The development will also feature a new pedestrian footpath along the northbound A38 corridor, complemented by extensive hard and soft landscaping enhancements aimed at improving safety and the visual appeal of the area.

To minimise disruption to both traffic and local residents, O’Brien Contractors plans to conduct most of the work ‘offline’, reducing the impact of live roadworks.

Tom O’Brien, Director at O’Brien Contractors, commented: “These A38 infrastructure improvements represent an important step towards reducing congestion for Hunts Grove residents and surrounding communities. While working alongside live traffic poses unique challenges compared to isolated construction sites, our experienced team is committed to delivering the project safely, efficiently, and on schedule.”
