New Restaurant with Panoramic Views Set to Replace ‘Dated’ 1980s Bridge at Regent Arcade

A bold transformation is underway in Cheltenham, as plans are submitted to remove the iconic 1980s bridge connecting Regent Arcade and Cavendish House, the former House of Fraser store. This pedestrian bridge, a fixture for decades and home to the Bridge Café for the past 16 years, could soon make way for a stunning new restaurant featuring panoramic views along Regent Street.

The bridge currently links the first floor of Regent Arcade directly into Cavendish House, but the proposed removal seeks to restore unobstructed sightlines along Regent Street, enhancing the area’s historic charm and streetscape. If approved by Cheltenham Borough Council, the removal will mark the first major change in years that opens up the bustling street’s views.

Replacing the bridge will be a nearly 2,500 square foot single-level restaurant space, complete with a balcony offering diners sweeping views both up and down Regent Street. This new venue aims to become an iconic addition to the area, combining excellent visibility with direct access from both the shopping centre and the street below.

The bridge’s removal is part of a larger, long-term plan to separate Regent Arcade and Cavendish House, both owned by Canada Life Asset Management. This initial step is expected to unlock exciting redevelopment possibilities for the former department store building.

Scott Lahive, Centre Manager at Regent Arcade, shared his enthusiasm: “The new restaurant will offer the best views on Regent Street and a unique layout with dual access from the shopping centre and Regent Street. While we will miss the Bridge Café, it will remain open until construction begins to ensure continuity for visitors.”

This development signals a fresh chapter for Regent Arcade and the surrounding area, promising to invigorate the local economy and preserve Cheltenham’s historic character in a contemporary new guise.
