New Hope for Cheltenham Playhouse as Urgent Fundraising Efforts Gain Momentum

Cheltenham Playhouse, a cherished local theatre facing the threat of closure, has received a crucial boost in its campaign to stay open. The venue recently launched an urgent fundraising effort after revealing its struggle with rising costs and the lack of stable funding.

In response, Cheltenham Borough Council has awarded the Playhouse a £25,000 grant to alleviate immediate financial pressures. This support marks a turning point, injecting much-needed hope into the theatre’s efforts to secure its future.

Operating under new trustees, Cheltenham Playhouse has crafted a comprehensive long-term masterplan, but financial backing remains essential to keep its doors open. The theatre initially aimed to raise £50,000 by the end of June, a goal now significantly bolstered by the council’s contribution.

Councillor Izaac Tailford, cabinet member for economic development, wellbeing, culture, and public realm, emphasized the importance of the Playhouse as a community asset. “For years, Cheltenham Playhouse has provided a platform for expression, creativity, and connection — whether on stage, behind the scenes, or in the audience. Alongside dedicated staff and volunteers, the theatre’s work makes arts accessible and inclusive for all. It’s crucial we come together to secure its future, not just for today but for generations to come.”

The council is also committed to ongoing support beyond the grant and encourages local residents to contribute—whether through donations or volunteering—to help sustain this vital cultural institution.

Looking ahead, Cheltenham Playhouse has set a further target of raising £100,000 by the end of 2025 to ensure long-term stability. Neil Burge, acting chair of the Board of Trustees, expressed deep gratitude for the council’s timely intervention. “This grant has transformed our fundraising outlook, bringing our first milestone well within reach. Combined with the generous community donations we’ve received, it enables us to plan positively for a sustainable future as we advance into the next phase of our campaign.”
