A new Greggs bakery is beginning to take shape in Cirencester’s Cricklade Street, marking the arrival of the third branch in the area. The bakery is set to open on the site formerly occupied by Mountain Warehouse, which itself moved into a space left vacant by Poundland, empty for several years.
Approved last year, the new Greggs will occupy the Mountain Warehouse unit and undergo a full transformation with a sleek, modern shopfront. The updated façade will feature aluminium framing in a contemporary grey finish, complemented by refreshed entrance doors and illuminated ‘Greggs’ signage in the company’s iconic blue and yellow colors.
Given the location within Cirencester’s conservation area, the development carefully addresses heritage concerns. While the building is not listed, its neighbor at 7 Cricklade Street holds Grade II listed status. Greggs’ planning proposal ensures the new design respects the character of the street, with most changes being like-for-like and no major internal or external alterations planned.

Additional upgrades include installing air conditioning condenser units on the rear flat roof and a new extraction system to ventilate the ground-floor retail area, effectively handling ovens and refrigeration equipment. To minimize odour impact, carbon filter cassettes will be fitted in the oven canopy, and regular maintenance will be performed to maintain efficiency and reduce disruption to the local environment.
An odour impact assessment supports these plans, noting that Greggs primarily bakes frozen products, which generates less odour than cooking methods like frying or grilling. The report concludes that, with proper upkeep of the extraction and filtration systems, there should be no significant nuisance complaints from nearby residents or businesses.
This new Greggs outlet promises a fresh, modern addition to Cirencester’s high street while carefully preserving the town’s historic charm and environmental quality.
